Penguins and Cavaliers duel to a draw

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Dominican Men's Soccer concluded its nonconference schedule coming from behind to earn a 2-2 draw Sunday with Concordia University Portland at Kennelly Field.

Wilson Briggs found the back of the net for his fifth goal of the season, while Brendan Adame slotted home his first goal of the season to help Dominican (3-2-1). William Finnie had seven saves for the Penguins, two of which came in overtime, to move to 1-0-1 on the year.

Nick Evans and Nicholas Denley each had an assist and a goal for the Cavaliers (2-2-1) in the first half to power their attack. Grant Alcorn ended the game with five saves to help Concordia hold on late for the tie.

Starting slow in the first half, the Penguins turned the ball over in their defensive third and Denley took the ball up the left side and sent a cross past Finley to Evans for his first goal of the season in the first minute of the match. In the 11th minute, Luke Raley looked to level the match for Dominican as Alcorn got caught out of the box trying to make a play on a loose ball, but Alcorn recovered in time to as Raley's shot attempt went right into his chest for a crucial save.

Finnie and Alcorn traded saves throughout the first half until an attempt by Concordia's Evans ricocheted off the left goal post, and Denley cleaned up the rebound for the 2-0 lead with eight minutes to go before the half. The Penguins retaliated in the 39th minute as Eddie Silverbush sent a long cross over Alcorn's fingertips to the head of Briggs, who put it home to close the gap to 2-1 at the intermission.

Cameron Baca took a ball down the right side before finding Adame at the top of the box for a one-timer and Adame put it into the upper-right corner of the goal for the tie two minutes into the second half. The Penguins continued pressuring the Cavalier's defense well into the second half. Briggs looked to give Dominican the lead in the 52nd minute as he beat the keeper, but Santeri Ihamuotila cleared the ball off the goal line at the last second for the clutch defensive save.

The Cavaliers found a late break in the 89th minute when Denley slipped past his defender, finding Noah Swigart inside the box for an attempt, but the shot went over the crossbar and the match headed to extra time.

The defenses tightened up as the teams tired in the extra periods with few chances to score the golden goal for either side. The Penguins best chance came in the 95th minute after a foul gave them a free kick just outside of the box, but the Cavaliers were ready for the quick play to prevent a shot.

The Penguins will begin conference play Saturday as they take on Bay Area rival Academy of Art at noon PDT. The Penguins encourage all fans to come out to Kennelly Field as they dedicate this game to raising awareness for pediatric cancer. Live stats and video will be available online.
