Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Newcomers lead way to Penguin victory

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Junior Kaitlyn Haub and freshman Alexis Luna lifted the offense to help Dominican women's soccer to a 2-0 victory Wednesday over UC Santa Cruz at the UCSC Soccer Complex.

Haub scored her first career goal finishing with two shots, while Alexis Luna finished with two shots on goal and her first career assist for the Penguins (1-3-1). The Dominican backline kept the pressure of Alyssa Ramos who saved the only shot she faced in the second minute of the game.

After the Banana Slugs' (2-4-0) early shot, the Penguins took the momentum when Haub found the back of the net on a corner kick from Alyssa Campbell in the 17th minute. Neither team was able to generate offensive pressure for the remainder of the half sending Dominican into the break with a 1-0 lead.

The Penguins pushed the ball forward to start the second half as Campbell again put well placed corner into the box and Luna headed the ball on frame, but Malia Starita made the save in the 47th minute. Luna then created a chance sending a ball to Michelle Li in the 55th minute and Li slotted home her first goal of the season for the 2-0 lead.

Luna continued to provide the pressure for the Penguins testing Starita in the 68th minute, but Starita made the save for the Banana Slugs. Tianna Brown had the last chance of the game with a header in the 89th minute, but Starita made one last save to keep the score unchanged.

Dominican will return home to take on Holy Names in a nonconference match Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. PDT at Kennelly Field. Live stats and video will be available online.
