ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Senior
Lily Dubuc scored early and Dominican women's soccer held off Sonoma State for the 1-1 tie Thursday at Seawolf Soccer Field.
Alyssa Ramos made eight saves for the Penguins (0-0-1) to earn her fourth consecutive decision reaching back to last year. The Seawolves (0-0-1) used strong midfield play to control possession for much of the game and keep pressure off Kristen Spear in the goal, but Dominican's back line did not allow them space in the final third of the field.
Freshman
Hannah Bonfils sent a ball over the top of the Sonoma defense in the fourth minute to Dubuc who sealed off her defender and put the ball inside the far post to beat the keeper for the first goal of the season. Freshman
Ana Herrera was able to put another ball on frame three minutes later, but Spear made the save.
Alexis Espitia had the first shot of the game for Sonoma in the 33rd minute, but it was blocked by the defense. Ramos then turned aside a header by Riley West to send Dominican into the half with the 1-0 lead.
The Seawolves evened the match in the 52nd minute as Ramos mishandled a long strike by Ashley von Tillow shot. Sonoma continued to press, but Ramos and the Dominican defense thwarted their efforts time after time.
In the 85th minute,
Michelle Li weaved her way behind the Sonoma defense and sent a ball curving toward the back post, but it went just wide. The Seawolves best chance to break the tie came in the 90th minute, but Sarah Lindborg hit the post with her shot and the game went into extra time.
The Penguins will take on Humboldt State in Rohnert Park, California, Saturday at 2 p.m. PDT at Seawolf Soccer Field. Live stats and video will be available online.
