SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis could not keep the momentum and fell 7-2 Sunday to No. 8 Academy of Art at the Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
No. 8 Klara Thell-Lenntrop and Alma Thell-Lenntrop of Academy of Art (11-4) defeated seniors
Rickimae Torres and
Skyler Schaar 8-3 to open doubles play. The Urban Kinghts' Monika Stanikova and Paula Alcantara added another 8-3 victory on court two, but the Penguins (7-10) kept the team match close after
Alex Wartenberg and
Kaitlyn Nguyen finished doubles with an 8-4 win for Dominican.
Academy of Art brought the heat in singles winning all but one match against the Penguins. Alcantara grabbed a 6-1, 6-1 victory to open singles play for the Urban Knights and A. Thell-Lenntrop put them within a point of victory after taking court three 6-4, 6-0. No. 7 Monika Stanikova then sealed the victory with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Torres. Freshman
Savannah Gray was the only Penguin to claim a victory in singles, topping ARTU's Kristina Gross 7-5, 6-4.
Dominican will face cross-bay rival Holy Names at 1 p.m PDT Friday at the Castellucci Tennis Center at Dominican University.
