Penguin seniors finish home careers with win

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Seniors Rickimae Torres and Skyler Schaar led Dominican women's tennis to a 6-3 victory Friday over Holy Names in their final home match at the Castellucci Family Tennis Center.

The Penguins (8-10) started the match strong as Alex Wartenberg and Kaitlyn Nguyen topped Julia Golub and Macy Barajas 8-4 in No. 3 doubles. Torres and Schaar completed their doubles match moments later as they also claimed an 8-4 victory over their Hawk (4-16) opponents. Taylor Lim and Savannah Gray battled back from an early deficit to close the gap to 7-6 as Dominican looked for a doubles sweep, but Amandine Clouvel and Rutendo Gwaze held them off for the 8-6 win for Holy Names.

Holy Names' Golub and Dominican's Torres were each awarded victories in singles as their opponents were forced to retire early due to injury. No. 63 Schaar then completed a dominant 6-0, 6-0 victory over Dominique Ernst to put the Penguins within a point of the team victory over their cross-bay rival. Gray clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Gwaze on court six.

Taylor Lim added the final team point for Dominican, as she came from a first set loss for a 2-6, 6-2, 10-3 victory.

The Penguins will hit the road Monday and conclude its regular season with a match against Arizona Christian in Phoenix at the Phoenix Tennis Center.
