SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis swept UC Santa Cruz 9-0 Saturday at the UCSC Tennis Center to move to 7-9 on the season.
The Penguins used its week off to recover from some minor injuries and took charge with a strong performance in doubles.
Rickimae Torres and
Skyler Schaar opened the match with an 8-1 win over Vera Smekalina and Ashley Isaac.
Kaitlyn Nguyen and
Alex Wartenberg followed with an 8-2 victory and
Taylor Lim and
Savannah Gray completed the doubles sweep with an 8-3 victory over their Banana Slug opponents.
Nguyen continued her winning streak in singles with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Isabelle Brown to continue the Dominican momentum. Torres then sealed the victory with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Kayla Manz in No. 2 singles. Wartenberg rebounded from a rough first set to top Savana McDowell 2-6, 6-4, 10-7 win on court four.
Lim added a 6-3, 7-6 (5) win and Gray claimed No. 6 singles 6-2, 6-4 for the Penguins. Schaar completed the sweep winning as she led in the final set before Ashley Isaac retired early.
Dominican will return home Sunday to play Academy of Art at 11 a.m. PDT at the Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
