PHOENIX – Dominican women's tennis concluded its regular season with a 6-3 victory over Arizona Christian at the Phoenix Tennis Center.
Taylor Lim and
Alex Wartenberg got the Penguins (9-10) off to a strong start, defeating Jordan Vlad and Gabby Gutierrez 8-1 in No. 3 doubles.
Rickimae Torres and
Skyler Schaar added an 8-3 victory over Autria Compton and Maria Garduno for Dominican. Elizabeth Kelley and Mikayla Morgan were able to get a point back for the Firestorm (10-10) with an 8-4 victory on the second doubles court.
Torres gave the Penguins back the momentum taking the first set 6-0 before her ACU opponent retired early. Wartenberg put Dominican within a point of the victory with a 6-2, 6-3 victory and her doubles partner Lim sealed the match for the Penguins with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Jayci Kelley.
E. Kelley was able to claim another point for the Firestorm as she held off
Savannah Gray for the 6-2, 7-6 (1) victory. No. 63
Skyler Schaar added the final point for Dominican taking No. 2 singles 2-6, 6-4, 10-5.
The Penguins will have Tuesday off before their first match at the PacWest Championships against Cal State LA in Surprise, Arizona, at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex. Live stats will be available online.
