LA MIRADA, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis claimed the first victory of its Southern California Road Trip 7-2 Tuesday over Biola University at the Biola Tennis Center.
Esther and Lauren Lee paired to give the Eagles (1-8) the 8-2 victory to open doubles play, but
Kaitlyn Nguyen and
Alex Wartenberg were close behind with an 8-2 win for the Penguins (5-4) to even the score.
Taylor Lim and
Savannah Gray gave Dominican the lead after doubles after they defeated Tinisee Kandakai and Allison Torres 8-2 in No. 3 doubles.
Biola struck first again as the match moved into singles, as Kandakai defeated Gray 6-1, 6-2 on court three. It was the last match victory for the Eagles as the Penguins grabbed the momentum.
Rickimae Torres started the run with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Madison Swaney. Lim added a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Lily Waterhouse and Nguyen sealed the Dominican victory with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Torres on court five.
Wartenberg held off L. Lee in the first set for a 7-6 (3) win and followed up with a commanding 6-1 set two victory to take the match.
Skyler Schaar and E. Lee were also locked into a tight match, but Schaar was able to escape with a 6-3, 6-4 match victory.
The Penguins will conclude its four game trip Wednesday at Cal State Los Angeles at 1:30 p.m. PST.
