SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis kept things close, but narrowly fell to Dixie State 7-2 Wednesday at Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
The match came down to key matchups at No. 3 doubles and No. 4 and No. 6 singles matches. All three were closely contested, but the Trailblazers (7-7) were able to come out on top. Dominican's (6-9)
Kaitlyn Nguyen and
Alex Wartenberg worked to push past Frances Goldsmith and Maria Goldsmith bringing it to the tiebreaker but came up just short falling 8-7 (7-3) in No.3 doubles.
Savannah Gray looked to give Dominican a key point in No. 6 singles as she edged McKelle Burnett 6-4 in the first set, but Burnett responded with a 6-3 win in the second to send it to a winner-take-all third set. Burnett held off Gray once again to take the third 6-3 for Dixie State. After falling 7-5 in a tight first set,
Alex Wartenberg had a commanding 6-1 victory in the second set against Sabrina Longson for the Penguins. Longson responded and once again held off Wartenberg for a 7-5 victory in the third set to claim the match for the Trailblazers.
Kyra Harames and Longson started the match strong for the Trailblazers with an 8-4 victory, while
Rickimae Torres and
Skyler Schaar gave the Penguins their first point in No. 1 doubles with an 8-4 victory of their own.
Nguyen tied the team match at two apiece as she gave the Penguins the win in No. 2 singles defeating Harames 6-0, 6-1. Yolena Carlon came away with the point for Dixie State in No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-3 to give the Trailblazers the lead.
Dixie States' Frances Goldsmith brought the team within one point of the victory as she defeated
Taylor Lim 6-3, 6-3. No. 1 singles ended much the same with the win going to the Trailblazers' Harames by the score of 6-2, 7-5.
Dominican will host Sonoma State Friday, April 6, at Castellucci Family Tennis Center beginning at 11 a.m. PDT.
