Kaitlyn Nguyen and
Alex Wartenberg had another strong showing in doubles play but Dominican women's tennis fell Tuesday to Cal State LA at the Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
Isabella Lopez and Luciana Di Laura were the first to strike for the Golden Eagles (7-9) in No. 1 doubles with an 8-4 victory. Elizaveta Sokolova and Mariko Sagara took No.2 doubles 8-2 for CSULA. Nguyen and Wartenberg gave the Penguins (6-8) their first team point holding off Chelsey Ruiz and Snezana Ivanovic 8-7 (4) on the third court.
Sokolava gave the Golden Eagles their third point of singles as she won after No. 69
Skyler Schaar retired early. Nguyen kept Dominican's hopes alive as she defeated Lopez 6-4, 6-1. No. 26 Di Laura responded for CSULA with a 6-2, 6-4 victory in No. 2 singles to put the Golden Eagles one point away from sealing the match. Cal State LA's Sagara claimed the winning point with a 6-0, 6-4 win in her singles match.
No. 6 singles ended much the same with Ivanovic came away with the narrow win over Penguins
Taylor Lim 3-6, 6-2, 10-8. Wartenberg looked to continue her strong play, but fell short in a tight 4-6, 6-0, 10-5 loss to Ruiz of Cal State LA.
Dominican will look to rebound Wednesday against Dixie State University beginning at 10 a.m. PDT at the Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
