TURLOCK, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis was unable to overcome an early deficit against Stanislaus State and fell 6-3 Sunday at the Stan State Tennis Courts.
The Penguins fell behind early when
Taylor Lim and
Savannah Gray fell to the Warriors' Cassidy Ferrell and Kayla Nguyen 8-1. Dominicans
Kaitlyn Nguyen and
Alex Wartenberg evened the score with an 8-1 victory over Ebone Qualls and Miliaana Proft. Doubles play concluded with Megan Hagerty and Taylor Galya of Stanislaus State winning 8-4 in No. 2 doubles.
Proft kept the Warriors momentum going in singles winning 6-2, 6-2 and Gayla put them within a point of the victory with a 6-2, 6-1 on court six. Lim kept the first set of No. 5 singles close, but fell 6-4, 6-2 to Qualls as Stanislaus State sealed the team victory. Ferrell added a 6-2, 6-3 victory for the Warriors for their final team point of the match.
Dominican's Nguyen and Wartenberg were the bright spots of the day for Dominican as they were the sole winners in doubles and singles play. Wartenberg claimed a strong 6-0 victory in the first set and held on in the second for a 7-6 (4) set victory to claim No. 4 singles. The final singles match went three sets between
Kaitlyn Nguyen of Dominican and Kayla Nguyen of Stanislaus State and Dominican's Nguyen came away with a 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 10-7 victory.
The Penguins will look to rebound at home Tuesday against Cal State LA at the Castellucci Family Tennis Center beginning at 11 a.m. PDT.
