TURLOCK, Calif. – Dominican softball showed more late-inning heroics as it defeated Simon Fraser 5-4 Saturday at Pedretti Park to split its games on the second day of the Tournament of Champions. The Penguins (11-21) dropped their first game of the day 7-4 to Northwest Nazarene.
Sophomore
McKenzie Schumacher finished 3 for 5 on the day with an RBI, two stolen bases and three runs scored. Freshmen
Alyssa Ramirez and
Vanessa Porto both ran their on-base streak to 10 games on the day. Porto finished 2 for 5 with two RBI and Ramirez came through with the walk-off single in the second game.
After a lengthy rain delay, Dominican found itself behind Simon Fraser 4-3 heading to the bottom of the seventh. Schumacher singled on a bunt down the third-base line and
Tayler Munoz followed with a single to right with one out. A double steal moved them each a base closer and Schumacher capitalized on a muffed catch by the third baseman to come home and tie the game 4-4.

In the first game Saturday, the Nighthawks (13-16) scored first when Anna Williams doubled down the left field line for the first hit of the game and Brittany Genuardi followed with a double of her own to right center for the 1-0 lead. The Penguins took advantage of an error in center field by Cassidy Fifield and Porto and Schumacher used their speed to beat throws home and give Dominican the 2-1 lead.
Keely Bowlan hustled to beat out a dropped strike three to reach safely in the bottom of the second and Porto tripled to left to bring her home and continue the Penguins' momentum. Schumacher then sent a ball deep into the right-center gap to score Porto on a sacrifice fly for the 4-1 lead.
Northwest Nazarene responded in the top of the third as Genuardi doubled to left to bring home two runs and cut the Dominican lead to one. In the top of the fifth, Kylie Orr tied the game with a single to center field, driving home Fifield to jump-start a 4-run inning for the Nighthawks. Shelbi Martinez drew a bases-loaded walk and Abigail Otto doubled home two more in the frame to give NNU the 7-4 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth,
Alexis Chinchilla singled to center for her second hit of the game and advanced to third on an error in the next at bat. Chinchilla then came home on a fielder's choice to cut the deficit to two, but it was as close as the Penguins would get.
The Clan started off the second game with two runs in the first inning thanks to an RBI single by Amanda Janes and an RBI triple by Alex Ogg. Porto led off the Penguins with a walk and Schumacher followed by reaching on an error after the second baseman was unable to handle the throw on a sacrifice bunt. Schumacher stole second and Porto scored on a passed ball to cut the lead to one and Christensen singled to right to score Schumacher for the 2-2 tie.
After Waltman held the Clan scoreless in the top of the second,
Dahlen Dennis walked and advanced to second on a passed ball to put another runner in scoring position. Porto singled to left to bring her in and give Dominican the 3-2 lead.
Janes gave Simon Fraser back the lead in the top of the fifth with a 2-RBI single to left center to make the game 4-3, but Waltman rebounded to leave her stranded with back-to-back groundouts. The rain and lightning started up in the bottom of the frame delaying the game for several hours.
Dominican will finish its six-game tournament schedule Sunday with games against Montana State Billings at 10 a.m. and Saint Martin's University at 12:30 p.m. PDT at Warrior Softball Field. Live stats will be available online.
