Penguins outlast Hawks

OAKLAND, Calif. – Taylor Lim sealed the 5-4 victory over Holy Names for Dominican women's tennis with a three-set singles victory Sunday at the Meyer Tennis Courts.

The Penguins started strong in doubles after Rickimae Torres and Skyler Schaar held off the Hawks' Jahan Bayramova and Dominique Ernst for an 8-6 win. Eliza McKean and Symone Jacques of Holy Names evened the match by taking the second court 8-7 (5), but Alex Wartenberg and Kaitlyn Nguyen claimed No. 3 doubles 8-6 to send Dominican into singles play with a 2-1 lead.

Singles play was back-and-forth as the teams traded match victories. Eliza McKean gave the Hawks the first win in singles defeating Wartenberg 6-0, 6-2. Schaar then answered with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over t Ernst to give the Penguins back the slim team lead. The lead was short-lived as Julia Golub won 6-3, 6-3 to even things up for Holy Names.

Torres edged Bayramova in the first set at No. 1 singles 7-6 (6) and used the momentum to take the second set 6-2 to put the Penguins within a match of the team victory. Jacques made sure the match would go on holding on for a 7-6 (4) victory in the first set before a 6-2 win in the second to even the match 4-4.

All eyes turned to the battle for No. 6 singles between Lim and Rutendo Gwaze. Gwaze claimed an early edge as she willed her way to a 7-6 (6) first set win, but Lim had the answer and evened the match with a 6-3 victory in the second set. Lim kept the momentum going into the third and finished off Gwaze with a 6-3 victory to send Dominican home with the win.

Dominican will return to the court Sunday to take on Stanislaus State at noon PDT at the Stan State Tennis Courts.
