Box Score HILO, Hawai'i -- Dominican men's basketball went for the win in the final seconds, but its shots and Hawai'i Hilo won 68-66 in an evenly matched game at the UHH Gymnasium.

Senior
Reverend Maduakor finished with a double-double of 19 points and 14 rebounds for the Penguins (5-16, 4-10 PacWest), and junior
Cedric Thomas added 17 points in the game.

Randan Berinobis and Devin Johnson each had double-doubles for the Vulcans (6-13, 5-7 PacWest), as Berinobis finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds and Johnson ended the night with 21 points and 11 rebounds.

Dominican struck first as Thomas hit a layup to take an early 4-1 lead after the first minute of play. However, the Vulcans would respond with two 3-pointers by Cleo Cain to make Hilo ahead 13-9.

The teams would exchange leads four times before back-to-back 3-pointers from freshman
Jordan Williams, and Maduakor gave the Penguins back the lead 22-17 with 7:48 left to play. Hilo began a 6-0 run with four minutes left as two layups by Devin Johnson helped the Vulcans tie the game, forcing Dominican to take a 30-second timeout.

The surge ended as freshman
Christian Futch grabbed on offensive rebound and layed the ball in to beat the buzzer and give the Penguins a 34-32 lead at the break.

Dominican kicked off the second half with a few clutch moments from Maduakor. His 3-pointer helped extend the lead 37-32, and he made three of his next four shots to keep the Penguins in the lead heading into the under 12-minute media timeout.

Hilo responded with a drawn foul from Johnson, resulting in a layup and two free throws to take 51-50 lead. A 3-pointer from Will Burghardt extended the Vulcans' lead 56-52 with 8:32 left in the game.

The winning momentum would turn over to Hilo, despite three consecutive jumpers scored by senior
Jeremiah Gray. In the final 11 seconds of the match, Dominican attempted a comeback but missed their last three shots on two offensive rebounds as they fall to Hilo 68-66.
