Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's basketball defeated Holy Names 97-60 Friday night at the Conlan Center.
Junior Natalie led the Penguins (17-8, 11-6 PacWest) with a remarkably efficient night, scoring 32 points on 14-15 shooting from the field. Senior
Sandra Ikeora notched a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Sophomore
Alanna Scott added 16 points on 7-9 shooting from the field and 2-3 on 3FG. Ariana Hernandez, Hannah Santos
and Nicole Machado-Potestio each finished with eight points to lead the Hawks (4-22, 3-15 PacWest).
The Penguins came out firing to start the game as Diaz scored on a spinning post move, then put in a jumper from the elbow to give Dominican an 11-2 lead nearly halfway through the first quarter. A few minutes later, Scott broke away for a fast break layup, Diaz followed with a crossover and a left-handed layup, and Scott added a 3-pointer from the wing as the Penguins closed the quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 22-8 lead.
Dominican maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second quarter as Ikeora put in a layup to make it 34-20 halfway through the frame. After the Hawks cut their deficit to 10 on a jumper from Taylor Krouse, Scott responded with a triple from the corner to give the Penguins a 37-24 lead. The advantage quickly swelled to 19 as sophomore
Anjelica Collins found Diaz underneath for a layup, then made a steal and pitched it ahead to Scott for another easy basket to make it 43-24. Diaz put in another layup just before halftime, giving Dominican a 45-30 lead at the break.
Diaz remained hot in the third quarter, putting in nine points just a few minutes into the period. She grabbed an offensive rebound and completed an and-1 to help the Penguins to a 59-35 lead at the first media timeout of the second half. Dominican continued to extend their advantage, with Scott finishing an and-1 in transition to make it 65-35. The Penguins took a 70-47 lead going into the fourth and ran away with their second straight win.
Dominican shot a blistering 54.5 percent from the floor and went 6-11 from 3-point range. The Penguins held the Hawks to just 28 percent shooting and forced Holy Names into 18 turnovers.
