SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis swept the singles matches to overcome a 3-0 deficit after doubles for the 6-3 victory Sunday over Stanislaus State at the Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
The two teams were locked into tight battles throughout a cold afternoon in San Rafael. The match began with the teams trading games on all courts. The Penguins'
Taylor Lim and
Kaitlyn Nguyen faced Taylor Galya and Megan Hagerty on court two and held a lead for most of the match, but Galya and Hagerty fought back and took the final two games for the 8-6 victory.
Savannah Gray and
Alex Wartenberg traded games with Ebony Qualls and Miliaana Proft of Stanislaus State, but the Warriors duo was able to maintain a slight edge and take the final game for another 8-6 victory.
Skyler Schaar and
Rickimae Torres trailed for the most of their match but were able to break serve twice to tie the No. 1 doubles match up 7-7 with Cassidy Ferrell and Kayla Nguyen, but Ferrell and Nguyen took the tiebreaker 7-3 to complete the Warriors doubles sweep.
Torres began the comeback charge for Dominican as she fended off Stanislaus State's Nguyen in the first set 6-4 and rode the momentum to a dominant 6-1 victory in the second set to take the match. Lim was close behind claiming a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Qualls in No. 6 singles, while Gray tied the team score with a 6-4, 6-2 victory on court five.
The match came down to a best of three contest on courts one, three and four. The Penguins' Nguyen edged Hagerty 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 to put Dominican within a match of the team victory.
It would not come easy as Proft and Ferrell each claimed the first set 6-3 in No. 1 and No. 3 singles to give the Warriors an early edge. However, the Penguins continued to charge back. Wartenberg topped Proft 6-3 in the second set to grab the momentum and then claimed a commanding 6-1 victory to claim the match and seal the Dominican victory.
On court one, Schaar was able to take a seesaw 6-4 set two victory over Ferrell to even the match and then finished off the singles sweep with a 6-3 third set victory.
Dominican will travel to face cross-bay rival Academy of Art Friday at noon PST at the San Francisco Tennis Club.
