ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis fell 7-2 Saturday afternoon to Sonoma State in its season opener at the SSU Tennis Courts.
The Penguins found themselves trailing early after the Seawolves swept doubles play with 8-1, 8-2 and 8-2 victories on the three doubles courts. Singles play was tighter between the two teams.
Alex Wartenberg claimed the first victory for Dominican fighting back from a 6-3 defeat in the first set to claim the second 6-0 before winning the tiebreaker 10-7 over her Sonoma State opponent.
Rickimae Torres was in the tightest contest of the afternoon. The Seawolves' Amanda Zuidema edged Torres in the first set 7-5, but Torres answered with a 7-5 victory in set two. Torres rode the momentum into the tiebreaker to claim a 10-3 victory for the match.
Julie Rea claimed the first singles victory for the Sonoma State with a 6-2, 6-1 in No. 6 singles. Carolyn Brooner then assured the Seawolves of the team victory with a 6-2, 6-3 victory on court three and Jensyn Warren took No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-2. Katherine Long claimed No. 5 singles 6-1, 6-0.
The Penguins will host Stanislaus State in its home opener Sunday at noon PST at the Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
