BELMONT, Calif. – Senior guard
Alanna Scott found her 3-point shooting stroke as she led Dominican women's basketball to a 73-56 road victory over Notre Dame de Namur on Wednesday night at Walter Gleason Gymnasium.
Scott finished the night with 23 points on 5-for-8 shooting from behind the arc to go with eight rebounds for the Penguins (5-1, 3-0 PacWest). Senior forward
Natalie Diaz scored 30 points, her fourth consecutive game reaching that mark, to go with a career-high 18 rebounds and four assists.
Rachel Pau'u led the Argonauts (1-5, 0-3 PacWest) with 18 points and nine rebounds. Dominican dominated the glass with a 48-30 advantage in rebounding and shot 46.2 percent from the field and 40 percent from 3-point range.
Vanessa Cruz and Scott got the Penguins off to a good start with back-to-back 3-pointers and Diaz followed with a layup to make it 8-3 in the opening minutes of the game. Diaz scored five unanswered points to increase the lead to eight, but Rachel Pau'u answered with four points during a 7-0 run that trimmed the Argonauts deficit back to one with 2:50 left on the first quarter clock.
Diaz had layups to end the first quarter and begin the second before
Anjelica Collins laid a ball in off the glass with nine minutes left in the half to give Dominican a 19-12 lead. The teams traded points for much of the second period, but Scott connected on a shot behind the arc and two free throws during a 9-point run that gave the Penguins their first double-digit lead of the game at 34-23. Sharon Roldan hit a 3-pointer of her own on the other end of the court for NDNU to cut the lead back to eight as the teams headed to the locker room.
Dominican continued to slowly build its lead as
Sydney Larocca cut into the lane for two points and Diaz followed with a jumper to give it the 38-26 lead and force an Argonaut timeout two minutes into the second half. After an NDNU 3-pointer, Diaz found Larocca for a layup through contact and then followed with three offensive rebounds and a layup on the free throw miss. The Penguins were relentless on both ends of the court as the run stretched to 16-4 after Scott's third and fourth 3-pointers of the game extended their lead to 20 points with 3:45 left in the quarter.
Dominican maintained its lead for the remainder of the game as they traded baskets with NDNU.
The Penguins will head next to the East Bay as they take on Holy Names on Sunday at Tobin Gymnasium. Live stats and video will be available online.
