OAKLAND, Calif. – Dominican women's basketball dominated both ends of the court as it topped cross-bay rival Holy Names 102-59 Sunday night at Tobin Gymnasium.
Senior forward
Natalie Diaz continued to roll scoring 26 points in 26 minutes for the Penguins (6-1, 4-0 PacWest), while senior guard
Alanna Scott continued to gain steam with 17 points on 3-for-4 shooting behind the arc. Sophomore forward
Savannah McMorrow came off the bench to score a career-high 24 points.
Gernijah Martin led the Hawks (0-8, 0-3 PacWest) with 14 points, but Dominican held Holy Names in check on their offensive end holding the Hawks to 33.8 percent shooting for the game. The Penguins set an NCAA Division II era record with 29 assists and 67.2 percent shooting from the field. Dominican shot a season-best 58.3 percent from behind the arc and the 102 points were the second-highest total during the Division II era, and the most the Penguins have scored against a Division II opponent.
Dominican asserted its will from the beginning as Scott drove through the lane for a layup to open the game and added a 3-pointer to jump-start a 16-4 run over the first three minutes. After a Martin layup, McMorrow came off the bench to score seven points and lead the Penguins on a 16-4 run that reached into the second quarter to take a 34-10 lead. The Penguins played with several different lineups as the teams traded baskets for the rest of the half and Dominican took a 47-26 lead into the break.
Scott started the third quarter with a layup and
Edina del Rosario knocked down a 3-pointer from the corner on the next possession. After
Julia Razo stole the ball away on defense, del Rosario found Diaz at the free-throw line for a jumper to make it 54-26 and force a Holy Names timeout with 8:27 left in the period. Diaz scored the next four as well for the Penguins with her jumper from the right block pushing the lead to 31 one minute later.
Scott added seven points in the quarter as the lead grew to as many as 37 with the Penguins showing no signs of slowing. Dominican saw several younger players get quality minutes in the fourth quarter as they cruised to the victory.
The Penguins will have the rest of the week off as they focus on their finals before facing Azusa Pacific Monday, Dec. 17, at 5:30 p.m. PST at the Conlan Center. Dominican will be collecting toy donations for the children of Marin, Sonoma and Butte counties in conjunction with San Rafael Santa Cop with each donation getting you a ticket into the game. Live stats and video will be available online.
