SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican Women's Soccer team fell 2-0 to Concordia University Irvine on Thursday night at Eagles Field.
The Penguins (6-9-2, 3-6-1 PacWest) finished with five shots with two were on goal as the Eagles (8-6-2, 6-3-1 PacWest) were strong on the defensive side of the ball. Junior goalkeeper Alyssa Ramos completed the match with five saves for Dominican.
Goalkeeper Kaelyn Whitcomb earned the start and win for Concordia, recording two saves on the match. The Eagles were also led by Kryssa Johnson who had one goal and one assist.
The teams traded attempts in the first half, beginning when Dominican's Kaitlyn Haub loosed a shot in the second minute, putting it high of the crossbar. Concordia's Kara Gilchrist attempted a header in the 14th minute, but the attempt missed wide and the game remained scoreless. The Eagles struck first in the 40th minute when Keely Abt dribbled down the field and found Johnson who put the shot inside the bottom right corner of the net for the 1-0 at the half.
The Eagles began the second half with a quick goal as Johnson found Emma Lyon, who placed her shot into the left hand corner of the net to extend Concordia's lead to 2-0 in the 47th minute. Yasmine Angel was the first Penguin to test Whitcomb in the net with a shot in the 60th minute, but Whitcomb was in the right place for the save.
Ramos collected all of her five saves in the second half, keeping the Eagles in check and giving her offense a chance. Alexis Luna, Alyssa Campbell and Bailey Kiser attacked the net in the late minutes of the game in an attempt to cut Concordia's lead, but none could find the back netting as Dominican fell to the Eagles 0-2 at the end of regulation.
The Penguins will return to the pitch on Saturday as they finish out their season at Biola University at 7 p.m. PDT. Live video and stats will be available online.
