Li Lands Winning Goal in Stunning Fashion

LA MIRADA, Calif. – Senior Michelle Li headed in a goal as time expired in the first overtime to send Dominican's women's soccer team home victorious 2-1 over Biola University Saturday night.

Li helped the Penguins (7-9-2, 4-6-1 PacWest) end the 2018 season on a high note, as the senior recorded her seventh goal of the season in the win. Senior forward Tianna Brown also came through in her final match in a Dominican uniform with her first goal of the season. The Penguins rallied behind the consistent performance of goalkeeper Alyssa Ramos, who finished with four saves.

Paula-Marie Labate scored her third goal of the season for the Eagles (7-7-4, 5-4-2 PacWest). Goalkeeper Viviana Poli accounted for five saves for Biola.

After a largely uneventful first half, Li sent a ball ahead to Dubuc for a shot that was blocked by the diving effort of Poli, but Brown ran in from behind and sent a sharply hit ball into the back netting to give Dominican the 1-0 lead.

Biola tied the match in the 74th minute as Colie Martin found Labate in the box, and Labate made her way around several players before poking the ball inside the left post. As play continued, Dominican's Yasmine Angel raced down the field, beating her defender to force a one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but Poli showed quick reflexes to make the save.

As time was running down, Biola's Sarah Jeffries received a pass from behind to lead her into the box. Jeffries dodged defenders as she circled around the box, and slipped past Dominican's backline to create a one-on-one with Ramos. Jeffries shot with a clear path to the net, but Ramos made a breath-taking save to send the match into overtime.

As overtime began, the Penguins were granted a free kick from the left flank. Senior Keira Dagy crossed it into the box for the Penguins and senior Bailey Kiser put a shot on frame, but Poli jumped up to punch it out of the box for a clearance.

The Eagles committed another foul on the left flank, to grant the Penguins another free kick as the announcer counted down the final six seconds of the match. Despite the lack of time, Dagy waited for her teammates to get organized before sending a perfectly placed ball behind the defense. Li met the cross at the right goalpost and jumped up over Biola's defenders to head the ball into the back of the net as time expired.

The Penguins cleared the bench to celebrate the golden goal by Li in her final game.
