SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican men's soccer team was unable to slow down Concordia University Irvine, as they fall to the Eagles, 5-2 Thursday afternoon.
Dominican's (5-10-2, 2-7-1 PacWest) Wilson Briggs continued his hot streak with a goal in the match, adding to his total of 14 on the season. Tanner Herrero also scored on a penalty kick for his second of the season. Goalkeeper Ruben Raygoza earned the start for the Penguins, and finished the match with 13 saves.
The Eagles (8-9, 6-4 PacWest) let loose early and often, finishing with 32 shots and 18 on goal. Concordia was led by Connor Gordon's hat trick, giving him 14 goals on the season to go with one assist.
The Eagles took control from the beginning with 10 of the first 12 shots of the match. During the stretch, Raygoza recorded five saves before Willy Ospina dribbled up the middle and beat his defender at the top of the box for the first goal of the match in the 25th minute to give Concordia the lead.
After the first goal, Dominican's defense settled in, holding the Eagles to only four shots on goal, but were unable to match on the offensive side, attacking the net just three times in the first half, two of which came off the foot of Briggs.
The Eagles continued their offensive onslaught in the second half, as Dominican committed a foul, granting them a free kick in good field position. The cross on the free kick was touched by Michael Oakson, and put into the back netting by Gordon for his first goal of the match in the 58th minute.
The Penguins retaliated in the 59th minute, as Briggs forced the keeper to make a move, and placed his shot in the opposite corner to cut the Eagles lead to 2-1. Concordia earned the point right back as Gordon's shot was blocked by Raygoza, but Elijah Amadin was there to put back the rebound for the 3-1 lead. One minute later a foul committed by Dominican in the box gave the Eagles a penalty kick and Gordon slotted home the shot to make it 4-1.
The Penguins were unable to stop the bleeding as a cross from Concordia's Jose Huerta on the flank found Ospina who deflected it to Gordon for the goal, extending the lead, 5-1. In the last minute of the match, a foul on the Eagles in the box set the Penguins up for a penalty kick. Herrero took the kick and found the back of the net to cut the Penguins' deficit to 5-2.
The Penguins will look to turn the tide as they face Biola University on Saturday at 5 p.m. PDT in their last match of the 2018 season. Live video and stats will be available online.
