Penguins Wrap Up Season Against Biola

LA MIRADA, Calif. – Dominican's men's soccer team fell behind early and was unable to string together enough chances as it concluded the season with a 3-1 loss to Biola University Saturday night.

Wilson Briggs continued his hot streak finding the back of the net for his 15th goal of the season for the Penguins (5-11-2, 2-8-1 PacWest). Briggs finished the year one shy of JP McCarvel's all-time Dominican record of 16 set in 2003 during the programs NAIA days. Senior goalkeeper William Finnie recorded four saves on the night.

The Eagles (8-8-2, 6-4-1 PacWest) were led by Leo Thompson who recorded a hat trick on the night. Goalkeeper Alex Muir added four saves for Biola.

The Eagles and Penguins exchanged shot attempts to begin the first half, including a header by Briggs in the seventh minute, but the attempt was met by Muir for a save to keep the match scoreless. In the 22nd minute, Gio Passarelli played a pass up to Thompson, who shot from 25-yards and put it inside the right post to give Biola the 1-0 lead.

Thompson added his second goal on a header off a cross from Lorenzo Macias to double the lead in the 30th minute. The Eagles attempted two more shots on goal before the end of the half, but Finnie was there to keep them out of the back netting. In the last minute of the half, the Penguins found a break in the defense, but Brendan Adame's shot from the top of the box hit the crossbar to send them into the break trailing by two.

Biola's Thompson continued his first half success with a goal within the first minute of the second half. A foul committed by the Penguins granted the Eagles a free kick and Thompson placed it inside the right post once again to complete the hat trick. The Penguins quickly countered with a goal of their own in the 47th minute, as Diego Vasquez sent a hard shot on frame and Muir's save found the foot of Briggs, who put it back in the net to cut the Penguins' deficit back to two.

Dominican attempted to make it a one goal match, as Colin Gunby sent a header between the posts in the 70th minute of the match, but Muir was once again in the right spot to make the save. Dominican's defense slowed the Eagles' down in the second half, not allowing a single shot on goal in the last 30 minutes of the match. However, the Penguins were unable to find the chances on offense to get any closer.

The Penguins will look ahead as they host an Individual Development camp geared toward High School (2019, 2020, and 2021 graduates) and Junior College players Dec. 15. To register for the ID camp, visit here.
