Michelle Li leads Penguins over Sharks

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Senior midfielder Michelle Li continued to make plays all over the field to lead Dominican women's soccer to a 3-0 victory Sunday afternoon over Hawaii Pacific at Kennelly Field.

Li finished the game with a goal and two assists for the Penguins (6-4-1, 3-1-0 PacWest). Senior defender Alyssa Campbell added two assists of her own, while junior goalkeeper Alyssa Ramos made three saves to earn her second consecutive shutout and fourth of the season.

Cheyenne Smith and Ebony Madrid had the only shots on goal for the Sharks (3-4-3, 1-1-1) as they struggled to get pressure in the attacking third.

Dominican started strong pressing the HPU backline and Michelle Li earned a corner kick in the 14th minute. Alyssa Campbell then sent a ball into the box on the ensuing corner, Michelle Li headed it down and it took a deflection off Bailey Kiser and over the keeper for the goal.

Campbell sent another corner to the head of Li six minutes later and Li headed it high over the hands of the keeper for the 2-0 lead.

Annalissa Pena had a chance to increase the lead in the 30th minute with a long curling shot from just outside the box, but Spencer was able to get a hand on it as she dived to her left to keep the score the same heading into the break.

Madrid was able to put the first shot on goal for the Sharks in the 49th minute, but Alyssa Ramos was there to make the save for the Penguins. Li took the ball away from the defender in the 52nd minute and crossed a ball into the center of the box for Lily Dubuc, who put the ball into the back netting for the 3-0 lead.

Dominican continued to play strong defense and the Sharks last chance to score came in the 76th minute, but Ramos was there to collect the save on the shot from Smith.

The Penguins will head to Southern California next week to face Azusa Pacific on Thursday at 5 p.m. PDT at the Cougar Soccer Complex. Live stats and video will be available online.
