AZUSA, Calif. – Dominican women's soccer team fell short in a 2-0 loss Thursday night in a tight matchup against Azusa Pacific Thursday night at the Cougar Soccer Complex.
Â
The Penguins (6-5-1, 3-2-0 PacWest) recorded only one shot on goal as the Cougars maintained a tight defensive scheme throughout the match. The one shot on goal was off the foot of Alexis Luna, as she added three total shot attempts. Kaitlyn Haub also recorded three attempts, but was unable to test APU goalkeeper Tatum French. Dominican goalkeeper Alyssa Ramos collected three saves, and received help from her defense, recording one defensive save in the 57th minute.
Â
Azusa Pacific (2-7-1, 2-1-1 PacWest), was led by Emmy Koflanovich as she recorded her first goal of the season and adding an assist. Kellie Yoshihara added a goal of her own in the 55th minute.
Â
The Cougars took the lead early as Koflanovich received a pass at the right edge of the box, and found the back of the net in the sixth minute of the match. Michelle Li retaliated, finding an opening in the defense, but her attempt was blocked before it could clear the defensive backline. APU entered the half with the 1-0 advantage.
Â
The Cougars began the second half on the attack, as Yoshihara connected on a centering cross from Koflanovich from the right flank. The attempt from 8-yards out crossed Ramos to extend the Cougar's lead to 2-0.
Â
The Penguins attempted a late surge in the final minutes of the match but were unable to capitalize, as Kayla Kukaua's shot attempt missed wide, and Luna's header attempt landed high of the crossbar as the final seconds ran off the clock.
