Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Penguins strike early for third consecutive victory

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's soccer defeated Chaminade 1-0 Friday afternoon at Kennelly Field in a defensive battle.

Neither team had many opportunities as they combined for 17 shots. Junior goalkeeper Alyssa Ramos collected her second shutout in the last three games with three saves for the Penguins (5-4-1, 2-1-0 PacWest).

The Penguins weathered some early pressure by the Silverswords (1-4-1, 0-2-1 PacWest) as senior Keira Dagy beat a Chaminade striker to a ball near midfield to find senior Bailey Kiser at the top left of the box to start a counter attack. Kiser then crossed a ball into the middle to freshman Alexis Luna who went around a defensive screen and beat the keeper with a quick shot for the 1-0 lead in the 10th minute.

Asya Asato-Kahele looked to equalize moments later as she was able to collect a ball near the penalty spot with Ramos off her line, but senior Alyssa Campbell leapt up to head the ball away for the save. Dominican looked to increase its lead in the 20th minute as a free kick found the head of senior Michelle Li and her shot bounced off the hands of Brandee Lane back to sophomore Kayla Kukaua, but Lane once again was in the right spot to make the save.

Breanna Bactista worked her way to the center of the box for the Silverswords in the 30th minute for a chance to tie the match, but her shot glanced off the outside of the right post. Tianna Brown collected a ball inside the box, turned and fired a shot in the 43rd minute in an attempt to increase the Penguin lead, but her shot went wide right to end the half.

The second half was largely uneventful with each team collecting three shots with a tightly officiated game in the midfield. Five yellow cards were handed out in the half among numerous fouls.

Dominican will return to the pitch at Kennelly Field to face Hawai'i Pacific at 2:30 p.m. PDT on Alumni Day. Live stats and video will be available online.
