Penguins Fall Short in Loss to Vulcans

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican men's soccer could not capitalize on its late opportunities as they fell 3-2 to the University of Hawai'i at Hilo on Monday afternoon at Kennelly Field.

The Penguins (5-9-2, 2-6-1 PacWest) were led by Wilson Briggs who finished with three shots on goal, one landing in the net to become Dominican's leader in goals in a single season during Dominican's NCAA Division II era with 13. Fellow senior, Diego Vasquez also accounted for a goal in the first half. Tanner Herrero made his mark on the match with two shots, one on goal, and an assist on Vasquez's goal. Goalkeeper Ruben Raygoza received the start for the Penguins and collected three saves.

The Vulcans (4-10, 3-6 PacWest) were led by Devan Yoshimura's three shots and his first career goal, while goalkeeper Nick Williams accounted for eight total saves for UHH.

The Penguins went on attack early and Briggs took a ball down the middle of the Vulcan defense in the eighth minute past three defenders, and nailed a left-footed shot across his body to the far post for the 1-0 lead. UHH earned a free kick just outside of the box moments later, but Raygoza was there to make a diving save to his left to keep the Vulcans off the board.

The Vulcans got on the board in the 11th minute when Yoshimura slipped past his defender put his shot in the top right corner to tie the match, 1-1. In the 19th minute, Herrero beat his defender down the right sideline and crossed a ball past the goalie to Vasquez who chipped it into the back netting to retake the 2-1 advantage.

In the 33rd minute, Pedro Werneck stole the ball from the Penguins and played it forward to Matt Wilkinson who turned and put his shot high over Raygoza's fingertips to make it 2-2 heading into the half.

UHH tacked on another goal a minute into the second half as Alen Acosta played a ball over the top to Curtis Walker who beat the keeper one-on-one for the 3-2 lead.

In the 73rd minute of the match, Briggs tested Williams twice, but Williams made diving saves on both occasions to keep the Vulcans in front. In the 78th minute, Dominican had its best chance to tie the match as Raley headed a ball down off the post and it ricocheted back to Eddie Silverbush for another shot on frame, but Williams was in position to make the save.

The Penguins will be on the road Thursday as they visit Concordia University Irvine at 1 p.m. PDT. Live video and stats will be available online.
