SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's soccer fell 2-0 Monday afternoon in a physical battle with University of Hawai'i at Hilo at Kennelly Field.
The Penguins (6-8-2, 3-5-1 PacWest) finished with five shots on goal, coming from five different players. Junior goalkeeper
Alyssa Ramos finished with three saves on the Vulcans' (8-4-2, 5-3-1 PacWest) six shots on goal.
UH Hilo was led by goalkeeper Bailey Cahill who recorded five saves and left the Penguins scoreless at the end of the match.
Within the first two minutes of the match, a foul set up the Vulcans for a free kick just outside of the box. The free kick taken by Brianna Valencia hit the crossbar, and was kicked around by several players inside of the box before Carlie Reader shot again.
Bailey Kiser was in position near the post to make a defensive save and clear the ball from the box.
In the 20th minute of the match,
Hannah Bonfils shot from the top of the box, but the attempt was met by Cahill for the save. In the 36th minute of the match, Jodi Lillie's free kick from the far center deflected off a Penguin defender and past Ramos to give the Vulcan's the 1-0 advantage.
Dominican retaliated with their best chance of the match as
Claire Brown beat her defender and then tried to chip a ball over Cahill, but Cahill got just enough of it to prevent it from getting into the net. Brown followed up on the deflection and tried to get off another shot, but UH Hilo's defense bumped her off the ball before she could put a shot on the empty net.
Senior
Lily Dubuc beat her defender on a breakaway attempt down center field in the 50th minute of the match, but was met at the top of the box by Cahill. Dubuc shot over Cahill aiming for the empty net, but missed to the right.
In the 73rd minute, Kayla Kunihisa moved down the right flank for the Vulcans and took a left-footed shot toward the right post, but Ramos was there for the save once more.
In the 85th minute, Reader stole the ball away from the feet of the Penguins, passed it through to Salas to set her up for a one-on-one with Ramos in the box. Salas placed it over Ramos to extend the Vulcan's lead to 2-0 late in the second half.
Dominican will travel to Concordia University Irvine on Thursday to take on the Eagles at 4 p.m. PDT. Live video and stats will be available online.
