SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's volleyball celebrated Senior Night with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-21) sweep of Holy Names on Saturday night in the Conlan Center.
Senior
Kate Even led the charge with 10 kills on a .273 hitting percentage to go with two blocks. Senior
Cat Thomason added five kills and three blocks, while senior
Brittany Latigue finished the match with three kills and three blocks for the Penguins (7-15, 5-12 PacWest).
The Hawks (3-20, 2-15 PacWest) were led Maddy Standley's eight kills and five blocks, but Dominican's defense was able to hold them to a .097 hitting percentage.
The Penguins got off to a slow start in the first set and Standley ended the opening 4-1 run with her first block assist of the night for Holy Names. Dominican slowly chipped away at the lead until two Hawk errors sparked it on a 6-point run and Chan ended it with an ace and a kill to give the Penguins a 10-8 lead. Moments later, more errors from HNU sent Dominican on a 4-0 run and Even ended it with a kill to make it 14-9. The Penguins continued to pull away leading by as many as eight before their 25-19 victory.
Dominican rode the momentum into the second set as Even found the floor on two early kills and Latigue added a solo block for the 5-1 lead. Freshman
Brittania Chan then led a 5-1 run with two kills and a block assist to extend the lead to seven, but Standley led an 8-2 charge with a kill and a block to cut the lead to 12-11. Sophomore
Josie Walser provided the answer spreading the ball to three different attackers for kills and adding two service aces to have her hand in every point of a 5-0 run, giving Dominican the 17-11 lead. It was all Penguins from there as they led by as many as 10 in the set on their way to taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set saw the teams trade leads several times in the early moments to a 13-13 tie. After a Hawk service error, Chan and fellow freshman
Mariah Ahid had back-to-back kills to give Dominican the three-point cushion. After the HNU cut the lead back to one, Even started a 4-1 run with a kill and combined with Latigue on a block to end the sequence and give the Penguins the 22-18 lead. Thomason then ended the match with a kill and a block assist of her own to complete the sweep.
Dominican will take on Biola in its penultimate home match Friday at 7 p.m. PDT at the Conlan Center. Live stats and video will be available online.
