Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Penguins unable to keep pace with Eagles

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's volleyball kept it close for two sets, but Biola University proved too much as the Penguins (7-16, 5-13 PacWest) fell 25-22, 26-24, 25-7 Friday night at the Conlan Center.

Senior Kate Even led Dominican with nine kills and four blocks on the night, while senior Cat Thomason and sophomore Catherine Johnson each added five kills. The Eagles (20-6, 16-3 PacWest) were led by Christina DenBoer's double-double of 14 kills and 13 digs.

DenBoer got Biola off to a strong start with two kills in a match-opening 5-0 run. The Penguins kept it close with the help of several Eagle errors to keep within three for the next several minutes. Dominican then had three straight errors to help Biola open an 18-9 lead, but the Penguins quickly cleaned up their offensive play down the final stretch. Johnson, Even and Thomason each contributed two kills as Dominican went on a 9-2 run to close the gap to 24-22 at set point. The ensuing rally went to Biola on a kill from Sabrina Winslow to lift the Eagles to a 1-0 lead in the match.

The Eagles got off to another strong start in the second behind two kills from DenBoer and they opened with a 9-2 lead. The Penguins slowly chipped away until Johnson found the floor on a kill and Even blocked Sierra Bauder's attack to spark a 7-1 run and cut Biola's lead to 15-14. After the Eagles used small runs to push the lead to five, Even lead a 5-0 run to tie the match at 24 with a kill and two blocks for Dominican. The next two rallies were some of the longest of the match, but Biola was the beneficiary of two errors to take the 26-24 victory.

After trading the first several points in the third set, the Eagles took command with a 12-1 run. The Penguins were unable to recover and they fell 25-7.

Dominican will host Concordia University Irvine in its final home match of 2018 at 3 p.m. PDT Saturday at the Conlan Center. Live stats and video will be available online.
