SAN RAFAEL, Calif – Senior forward Wilson Briggs' record-tying goal was not enough for Dominican's Men's Soccer team, as they fell to Fresno Pacific University 3-1 at Kennelly Field on Saturday afternoon.
Briggs scored Dominican's (5-8-2, 2-5-1 PacWest) lone goal, as he tied alumni Pedro Guevara's single-season record for goals made in Dominican's NCAA Division II era, with twelve. Eddie Silverbush came in clutch for the Penguins in the second half, making several plays on defense to keep the Sunbirds out of the box. Senior goalkeeper William Finnie ended the match with four saves, on Fresno Pacific's seven shots on goal.
Fresno Pacific (12-2-1, 7-2-0 PacWest) was led by Anthony Velarde, Brian Leyva and Isaiah Asencio, who each accounted for a goal in the Sunbird's victory. Goalkeeper Patrick Timmer received help from his entire squad, as he only faced three shots on goal from the Penguins, and finished the match with two saves.
Just as FPU seemed to slip past Dominican's defense in the 35th minute for an opportunity in the box,
Eddie Silverbush came through with a great defensive stop and drew a yellow card from FPU to turn the possession back in Dominican's favor. FPU rallied back with an attack in the 38th minute, that left Velarde one-on-one with Finnie from inside the box. Finnie left his feet to make a diving save to keep the match scoreless.
It wasn't until the 44th minute when an FPU corner kick set up an attack for Joao Ravasio that deflected off Finnie and Asencio was able to put the rebound into the back netting for the 1-0 lead at the break.
The Penguins evened the score in the second half as Briggs forced a penalty kick in the 52nd minute and followed it up by sending his shot from the spot into the top right corner to tie the match 1-1.
In the 86th minute, the Sunbirds drew a foul just outside of the box to set up for a free kick. Fresno Pacific capitalized as Velarde bent his shot around the defensive wall and past Finnie to take a 2-1 lead. Shortly after, Loren Friesen stole a ball and found Leyva inside of the box for a goal to extend the Sunbird's lead to 3-1.
The Penguins will have a quick turn-around, as they take on the University of Hawai'I at Hilo for their final home match of the 2018 season on Monday at noon PDT. Live video and stats will be available online.
