Penguins miss chances against Argonauts

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican men's soccer was unable to capitalize on its chances as it fell 2-0 to Notre Dame de Namur on Sunday afternoon at Kennelly Field.

The teams were nearly identical statistically as the Argonauts (4-8-2, 3-3-1 PacWest) led 18-17 in total shots, but they were tied with the Penguins (5-7-2, 2-4-1 PacWest) at seven shots on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Ruben Raygoza made his fourth start and made five saves for Dominican in the loss. His counterpart, Israel Mendoza, finished with six saves.

Naia Graham had the first opportunity of the match taking a ball into the right side of the box to get off a shot, but Raygoza was there to punch the ball wide of the net for the Penguins in the seventh minute. Wilson Briggs loosed his first shot of the match in the 11th minute but Mendoza was there to push it out of bounds. Brendan Adame followed up with a beautiful corner into the box to the foot of Gunby and Gunby put his shot high, but it hit the crossbar and bounced in front of the goal line. Diego 

Vasquez took a ball down the left flank in the 38th minute and launched a curling shot toward the net from an odd angle, but Mendoza was able to track the ball and punch it over the bar to keep the Penguins off the board. Neither team was able to do much for the remainder of the half as the teams remained scoreless at the break.

Grant Smyth found Christian Pelayo on the right side of the box in the 72nd minute and Pelayo put it into the top left 90 to give NDNU the 1-0 lead. Dominican countered quickly as Miguel Maldonado took a ball down the right flank and maintained possession through heavy pressure before sending a ball to Luke Raley on the left side of the box and Raley sent the ball near post, but Mendoza made a diving save to keep them off the board.

Josh Santillian found Naia Graham up the left side in the 81st minute and Graham beat his defender for the 2-0 lead. The Penguins again answered with instant offensive pressure earning a corner in the 82nd minute and Wilson Briggs followed up with a shot on the empty net in the 83rd minute after getting past Mendoza, but the Argonaut backline was there to make the save.

Dominican will return to the pitch Saturday at noon PDT to take on Fresno Pacific at Kennelly Field. The team will celebrate its departing seniors in a ceremony prior to the kickoff. Live stats and video will be available online.
