Penguins force double overtime draw against PLNU

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Junior goalkeeper Alyssa Ramos made several crucial plays to lead Dominican women's soccer to a 0-0 draw Saturday afternoon with PacWest frontrunner Point Loma.

Ramos (6-5-2) finished the match with six saves for the Penguins (6-5-2, 3-2-1 PacWest), often competing in one-on-one matchups, to shutout the Sea Lions (10-1-1, 5-0-1). Seniors Lily Dubuc and Bailey Kiser provided an offensive spark for Dominican applying pressure on Point Loma's defense late with two shots each. The Penguins defense also limited Point Loma standout Julia Glaser to just one shot on goal.

Goalkeeper Emma Hinson (10-1-1) collected five saves, two in overtime, to lead the Sea Lions. Abbey Teagle contributed four shots with two on goal for PLNU.

The Sea Lions created the first opportunity to score in the 16th minute, as Bella Diaz beat her defender, forcing a one-on-one between herself and Ramos, but Ramos met her at the top of the box to make a diving grab. Ramos made another crucial save as Teagle crossed in on the right flank only to meet Ramos coming out from between the posts to end the attack.

Teagle created another attack from the right flank in the 24th minute, but it was Alyssa Campbell who broke up the attempt with a block in front of Ramos to keep the match scoreless. Later in the 26th minute, it was Teagle again, beating her defender to force another one-on-one for the Sea Lions and once again Ramos came out to make a diving save at the top of the box.

Dubuc created the first scoring opportunity of the second half, beating her defender in a foot race to force a one-on-one with the keeper, but Hinson was there for the diving save. In the 61st minute, Diaz made a move around her defended to attack from the top of the box and attempted to chip the ball over Ramos, but her shot hit the right goal post and the Penguin defense cleared the ball. Neither team could capitalize on late attempts and they headed to extra time.

Dominican held Point Loma to one shot attempt in the first overtime and the Penguins were able to get off four shots. Dominican fought to create an opportunity to attack in the second overtime with an open goal but Point Loma defender blocked and cleared Hannah Bonfils' shot to preserve the draw.

The Penguins will return in the pitch next Sunday, Oct. 21 as they matchup against Notre Dame de Namur. Kickoff at 2:30 p.m. PDT. Live video and stats will be available online.
