Penguins fall in defensive battle with Argonauts

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's soccer fell 1-0 in a defensive battle Sunday afternoon to Notre Dame de Namur at Kennelly Field.

The Penguins (6-6-2, 3-3-1 PacWest) held a 12-7 advantage in total shots, but a more narrow 4-3 advantage in shots on goal. Alexis Aguilar led the Argonauts (4-10-0, 3-4-0 PacWest) from the net with four saves to earn the victory. Junior goalkeeper Alyssa Ramos finished with two saves for Dominican, while senior forward Tianna Brown put two shots on frame.

The Penguins put some early pressure on NDNU as Tianna Brown sealed off her defender to get a good look at the goal from the top of the box, but Aguilar was there to make the save in the second minute. In the sixth minute, Susan Whitney played a ball forward to Angelle Ferge and Ferge was able to take a touch past the keeper and put the ball into the back of the empty net for the 1-0 lead.

In the ninth minute, Lily Dubuc was able to race past the defense into the right side of the box for a great look at the equalizer as she sent the ball toward the far post, but Aguilar dove to her right to make the save. Alyssa Ramos made two saves in the final 35 minutes of the period to keep Dominican within a score at the break.

Bailey Kiser then looked to have a great chance at the equalizer in the 50th minute as she ran down the left side of the box, left a defender on the ground when she cut back to the middle and sent a shot toward goal, but Aguilar closed the angle quickly to make the save.

Dominican will return to the pitch Saturday at 2:30 p.m. PDT to take on Fresno Pacific at Kennelly Field. The team will celebrate its departing seniors in a ceremony prior to the kickoff. Live stats and video will be available online.
