Penguins bested by Blazers

Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. -- Dominican's men basketball fell to Dixie State 92-70 Thursday at the Conlan Center.

Senior Jeremiah Gray led the Penguins (3-13, 2-7 PacWest) on offense, dropping 20 points on the night. Junior Cedric Thomas had seven points and seven rebounds while senior Reverend Maduakor also contributed 15 points and four assists. Trevor Hill led the Trailblazers (12-6, 9-2 PacWest) with 18 points, six rebounds, and seven assists, while Brandon Sinister finished with 20 points.

Dominican got on the board in the first half on a lay-up by Maduakor, and back-to-back 3-pointers by Gray allowed the Penguins to take a 10-7 lead four minutes into the game. However, Dixie State would start an 8-0 run to take a 19-13 lead, stopped by another Maduakor layup. The Trailblazers would go on two other 8-0 surges, the first one started by a free throw by Quincy Mathews, and the other on a Trevor Hill 3-pointer, putting the Penguins behind by 20 points with six minutes left in the half. Despite 13 first-half points from Maduakor, Dominican trailed Dixie State 50-34 at the break.

The Penguins got off to a hot start in the second half with consecutive 3-pointers from junior Xavier Williams and Gray to trim the Dixie State lead to 10. Freshman Romeo Mays finished a 3-point play that brought Dominican within single-digits at 55-46 with 15:47 left. The Penguins continued to fight but were unable to get much closer. The Trailblazers went on another 7-0 run thanks to five quick points by Brandon Sinister to extend their lead by 17 with 5:21 left in the gameas Dixie State pulled away for the win.

Dominican takes the court Saturday as the visiting Hawai'i Hilo face the Penguins at the Conlan Center for a 4 p.m. tip-off. Live stats and video will be available online.
