Box Score ROCKLIN, Calif. –
Wilson Briggs provided constant pressure for Dominican men's soccer on the back line of William Jessup, to lead the Penguins to a 2-1 victory Saturday at Jessup Field.
Briggs led all players with five shots and three on goal. He finished with a goal and an assist for Dominican (2-1) with
Damian Cortez claiming the other goal on his lone shot attempt.
The Warriors (3-3) were led by Adolfo and Christian Guzman who had four and three shots, respectively.
Early pressure resulted in a foul in the box to give the Penguins a penalty kick in the 18th minute and Briggs put them on the board with a goal to the lower right corner of the goal.
Colin Gunby had an opportunity to double the lead in the 25th minute, but Robert Harmelink was waiting in his net to stop the attempt.
William Jessup's best opportunity of the half was thwarted when
Wyatt Walsh made a one handed save in the 41st minute on a header from A. Guzman to preserve the 1-0 lead at the half.
The Warriors tied the game in the 46th minute when C. Guzman beat the keeper on an assist from Conner Ertz. Briggs continued to provide the pressure and eventually broke free in the 77th minute through the middle of the field and sent a cross back to
Damian Cortez in the center of the box for a goal to the lower right side to retake the 2-1 lead.
William Jessup threatened only once more on a bouncing ball in the box that Walsh ensured went over the crossbar and the Penguins defense held strong.
Dominican will travel next to Vallejo, California, Thursday to take on California Maritime Academy at 7 p.m. PST.
