Penguins drop high-scoring contest to Eagles

Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. – Dominican men's soccer fell 5-3 to Biola in a high-scoring second half at Al Barbour Field.

The Penguins (3-5, 0-4 PacWest) finished the game with 14 shots and five on goal, while the Eagles had 21 shots and 10 on frame. The teams combined for seven second-half goals. Wilson Briggs led the Dominican with four shots and Luke Raley had a team-high 2 shots on goal. Kearon Kerr led the offensive charge for Biola with three shots, all of them put on frame.

Alejandro Pelayo had the first scoring chance of the game taking a Penguin turnover into the box, but Christian Lathrop won the one-on-one battle collecting the first of his five saves. Raley then opened the scoring in the sixth minute after Colin Gunby headed a free kick to the right side of the box and Raley put it in the net for the 1-0 Dominican lead.

The Penguins had the chance to increase their lead in the 20th minute, but Gunby's header was cleared away from danger at the last second by an Eagle defender. Dominican took a 1-0 lead into the half as Lathrop made two more saves to keep the lead.

The offenses for both teams exploded out of the half. Pelayo tied the game in the 49th minute for the Eagles after he chested a ball past Lathrop. Diego Vasquez and Austen McGregor then hooked up on a give and go and Vasquez sent a ball into the netting from 22 yards out to make it 2-1 in favor of the Penguins in the 51st minute.

Kerr tied the game five minutes later as he sent a hard shot that deflected off Lathrop into the goal. Jarret Pugh gave the Eagles their first lead on a penalty kick in the 63rd minute, but Briggs collected a loose ball above the box and beat the keeper to the right post to make it 3-3.

Sammy McKay made it 4-3 Biola as he was able to take a bouncing cross from Jack Cybulski and put it into the back netting. Dominican began to push forward and had three shots in a three-minute span, but were unable to put the ball on frame.

Kerr added an insurance goal in the 86th minute after Lathrop made a save on his initial shot.

The Penguins will return to Kennelly Field to take on Azusa Pacific at 2:30 p.m. PDT Saturday. Live stats and video will be available online.
