Penguins Split Pair of Games on Saturday in Turlock

TURLOCK, Calif. – With stellar pitching and defense, the Dominican University of California softball team earned another split on Saturday during day two of the Tournament of Champions.

So far in the three-day event hosted by Stanislaus State, the Penguins are 2-2 and tied with Hawaii Pacific for most wins among PacWest teams. On Sunday, Dominican will challenge Central Washington at 9 a.m. and then Cal State San Bernardino at 3 p.m.

Senior pitcher Katelyn Harden continues to put together an impressive weekend on the mound. After tossing eight innings Friday with two runs allowed, she limited Concordia to the same amount of runs in Saturday's win. She is now 11-4 this season with a 2.38 earned run average.

Game One: Penguins 5, Cavaliers 3

Despite the early start at 9:56 a.m., it didn't take long for the offenses to wake up. In the top of the first, Karitza Reyes knocked an RBI single to bring in Alyssa Lanza. In the bottom half of the inning, Concordia evened the score with a solo homer.

Harden provided herself some run support with a solo homerun of her own in the top of the second. It marked the fourth homer of her career, with one in each of the past three seasons.

The score remained 2-1 in favor of Dominican until the sixth inning. With two outs in the top half, Lanza lined a single down the line and that allowed Harden to cross the plate. Although the Cavaliers scored in that same inning to trim the gap to 3-2, the Penguins added two more scores in the seventh inning with RBI singles by Reyes and Keely Bowlan.

Concordia put the winning run at the plate with two outs but Harden got a lineout to wrap up the 5-3 victory.

Game Two: Yellowjackets 5, Penguins 2

Helped along by a pair of Dominican errors, Montana State Billings built up an early lead and never looked back. The Yellowjackets built a 5-0 lead through the first four and half innings.

The Penguins got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, thanks to a pair of sacrifice flies. McKenzie Schumacher and Lanza initiated the rally with a pair of infield singles. Then Dahlen Dennis and Reyes provided the clutch fly outs to put Dominican within striking distance at a 5-2 score.

The offense went silent the rest of the way though for Dominican as MSUB pitcher Megan Dettling finished with just three hits allowed through her seven innings pitched.
