TURLOCK, Calif. – The Dominican University of California softball team dropped a pair of games on Sunday to close out action at the Tournament of Champions.
The Penguins were dealt a 1-0 loss to Central Washington in the morning and then fell 6-1 to Cal State San Bernardino in the afternoon.
Dominican's overall record falls to 16-20, including a 2-4 mark this weekend at the three-day event hosted by Stanislaus State.
The Penguins head home to host Chaminade for a PacWest doubleheader on Monday starting at 3 p.m.
Game One: Wildcats 1, Penguins 0
The early game featured a tremendous pitching duel as Dominican's
Gaby Katafias went up against CWU's Kayla Smith. The Penguins' offense was held scoreless and limited to five hits.
Rightfielder
Keely Bowlan reached base in two of her three plate appearances, collecting a single and a walk against the Wildcats' pitchers.
Katafias also pitched a gem, allowing just three hits in her six innings pitched. The lone CWU run proved to be an unearned score. The Wildcats earned another baserunner in the fourth and a sacrifice fly led to the game's only run.
Game Two: Coyotes 6, Penguins 1
The Penguins once again managed five hits but defensively couldn't slow down CSUSB. The Coyotes jumped out to a quick lead with two runs in the opening inning and took a 6-0 advantage into the bottom of the sixth.
To start Dominican's rally in the sixth,
Alyssa Lanza registered a leadoff bunt single to first base. With two outs,
Karitza Reyes knocked a clutch double to allow Lanza to score.
CSUSB held off the Penguins the rest of the way to wrap up the 6-1 victory.
