Dominican Falls to CBU Thursday in PacWest Action

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Dominican University of California softball team dropped a doubleheader on Thursday at California Baptist.

The Penguins lost the first game 7-2 and then fell in the second contest 7-0. As a result, Dominican's marks drop to 6-12 overall and 5-5 in the PacWest Conference. CBU holds an overall record of 12-7 while going 6-2 in league play.

Sophomore Dahlen Dennis delivered the big hit of the day for the Penguins as she knocked a two-run double in the top of the sixth inning of the first game. So far this season, the Fremont native has three multi-RBI games and a team-high 10 total runs batted in 2017.

Keely Bowlan started the sixth-inning rally with a two-out single to left field. Catlyn Cavender followed with a double, moving Bowlan up to third. Dennis' double came next, pulling the Penguins to within a 5-2 deficit.

The Dominican offense was otherwise stifled by the Lancers' pitching on Thursday. In the second game, CBU starter Ashley Coleman tossed a complete-game shutout with just three hits allowed. McKenzie Schumacher, Karitza Reyes and Alyssa Lanza provided those hits for the Penguins.

So far in 2017, Cavender and Schumacher lead the team in batting average with marks of .357 and .352. Schumacher earned a stolen base in Thursday's second game, bringing her season total to 15 stolen bases in 17 attempts.

In the midst of an eight-game road stretch, Dominican will return to action on Sunday with an 11 a.m. doubleheader at Humboldt State.
