ARCATA, Calif. – The Dominican University of California softball team gave No. 1-ranked Humboldt State a tough test on Sunday but ultimately dropped the doubleheader to the Jacks.
Both non-conference games ended in 3-1 scores. With the results, the Penguins' overall record falls to 6-14. At the top of the NCAA Division II national rankings, HSU improved to 20-1.
Freshman
McKenzie Schumacher put together a productive day offensively, going 3-for-7 through the doubleheader. Dominican received a pair of stellar pitching performances, first from junior
Gaby Katafias in game one and then senior
Katelyn Harden in the finale.
The Penguins will wrap up their long stretch of road games on March 18 with a 12 p.m. doubleheader at Notre Dame de Namur.
Game One: Jacks 3, Penguins 1
Humboldt took a 3-0 lead into the top of the sixth inning after the host team took advantage of a pair of unearned runs in the fifth.
Dahlen Dennis started a Dominican rally in the sixth, placing a single into center field to open the inning. After a Harden walk put runners at first and second, a one-out flyout led to a Jacks' throwing error that allowed Dennis to score and put the visitors on the board.
With just a two-run margin in the final inning, HSU managed to retire Dominican in order 1-2-3 to close out the win.
Through Katafias' six innings pitched, she allowed just three hits and struck out three batters.
Game Two: Jacks 3, Penguins 1
The Penguins jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second game, scoring a run with two outs in the top of the first. Schumacher started the rally with a leadoff bunt single. With one out,
Catlyn Cavender reached on an error and Schumacher raced over to third.
Smart baserunning led to Dominican's run. As Dennis was retired on strikes, Cavender stole second and Schumacher scored on the throw to put the Penguins ahead 1-0.
The Jacks tied the score with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning and then added two runs in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. HSU retired the final six Dominican hitters to once again escape with a two-run victory.
Harden's final line was six innings with five hits allowed and four strikeouts.
