Jeremiah Gray torches Sunbirds in second half

Box Score FRESNO, Calif. – Senior Jeremiah Gray had a big second half as Dominican men's basketball held on late for a hard fought 73-66 victory Saturday on the road over Fresno Pacific at the Special Events Center.

Gray scored 21 points in the second half to notch his third double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Penguins (3-7, 2-1 PacWest). Junior Cedric Thomas added 17 points in the game, 11 in the first half, while freshman Jordan Williams led the Penguins with five assists to go with seven points.

Adrian Antunez scored 16 points for the Sunbirds (2-8, 1-2 PacWest), while teammate Toby Christensen grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.

Dominican shot 42.6 percent from the floor and 27.3 percent from 3-point range, while Fresno Pacific had the better percentages, hitting 44.3 percent from the field and 28.6 percent behind the arc. Although the game had 10 lead changes, Dominican was able to capitalize off 15 Sunbirds turnovers and produce 18 points from those turnovers.

After Sam Holmes tied the game at 64 with a 3-pointer for the Fresno Pacific, Gray drew a foul and hit both free throws to give the Penguins back the lead. Williams then stole the ball and laid it in to increase the lead to four. Williams stole the ball again and Gray knocked down a 3-pointer on the other end to end the 7-0 run and give the Penguins all the room they needed to close out the victory.

The first half remained close overall. Antunez scored the first four points for the Sunbirds with two early free throws and a 2-point jumper in the first two minutes. A three-pointer by junior Anthony Hernandez erased the brief Fresno Pacific lead and swung the momentum in Dominican's favor. A layup by freshman Romeo Mays would give Dominican their largest margin in the half at 20-11 with 10:25 left, and the Penguins would go into the second half leading 33-30.

The Sunbirds regained an early lead entering the second half, as a three-pointer by AJ Kirby gave Fresno Pacific their biggest lead over the Penguins on the night at 49-43 with 14:13 left. Two jumpers by Gray gave Dominican back the lead three minutes later, and the Penguins never trailed for the remainder of the game.
