Penguins set career-highs in win over Bethesda

Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. -- Juniors Natalie Diaz and Alanna Scott broke career-highs in points as Dominican women's basketball defeated Bethesda 100-75 in a physical match at the Conlan Recreation Center on Tuesday night.

Diaz scored 33 points in the game for the Penguins (8-2, 3-0 PacWest), breaking her previous career-high of 32 points which she set against Notre Dame de Namur on December 2. She added 11 rebounds to complete a double-double. Senior Sandra Ikeora also had a double-double, leading the Penguins with 14 rebounds and 15 points. Scott contributed 28 points, shooting 80% on 3-point attempts.

Briah Nelson led the Flames (0-16) with 22 points in the game. Taylor Smalley posted 14 points and six assists.

Dominican significantly outshot Bethesda, with the Penguins shooting 55.4% from the field and 52.6% behind the arc. Meanwhile, the Flames posted 30.7% from the floor and 30.8% from 3-point range. Bethesda was able to get 22 points off 27 turnovers from the Penguins, but it was not enough.

The first quarter was closely contested, as Dominican struck first with a 7-2 run to open the game. However, the Flames held a brief 23-19 lead over the Penguins with 2:14 left in the quarter. The Penguins responded with a 9-0 run to close the quarter, as Diaz had 12 of her 33 points in the first ten minutes.

The rest of the game belonged to the Penguins. Dominican began to break away in the 2nd quarter as they closed the 1st half with a 14-2 run with help from three layups from Diaz in the series. The Penguins ended the half leading 53-35.

The 3rd quarter saw Dominican's smallest lead at 19 points as the dominance continued. A three-pointer by Scott and a jumper by Diaz helped give the Penguins a 32-point lead and Dominican held a 78-47 lead at the end of the quarter.

Freshman Savannah McMorrow had a breakout 4th quarter, helping the Penguins reach triple digit points by adding six points, helping Dominican to a 100-75 win.

The Penguins will take the court again Thursday as they host Central Washington at 5:30 p.m. Live stats and video will be available online.
