Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican men's soccer and Concordia University Irvine played to a 0-0 draw Saturday in a physical contest with nine yellow cards being handed out on Senior Day at Kennelly Field.
The two sides played a nearly equal game statistically with the Eagles (9-4-3, 7-2-2 PacWest) finishing with 17 shots and six on frame, while the Penguins (4-10-3, 1-9-3 PacWest) had 16 shots and eight on goal. Junior Christian Lathrop recorded his second shutout of the season with six saves.
Sophomore Luke Raley put his head on a free kick in front of the net in the 14th minute, but William Whiddon made the save to keep the match squared. Four minutes later, junior Diego Vasquez took a ball down the center of the field and took a shot from 20-yards out, but Whiddon tracked the curling shot for the save.
The second half was a defensive battle in the midfield as neither side had many chances for the go-ahead goal. Dominican's best chance came late in the half as Vasquez and junior Tanner Herrero played a little give and go, but Vasquez was unable to get off his shot and the ball went back the other direction.
In the 89th minute, Julian Font had a chance for Concordia finding some room at the top of the box to challenge Lathrop, but Lathrop won the battle to send the game to overtime.
Junior Matt Case found Vasquez all alone with the keeper on the left side of the box in the 96th minute, but Whiddon grabbed the hard shot to send the game to a second extra period. Michael Oakson then had a chance one-on-one with Lathrop in the 103rd minute and Lathrop collected the save to preserve the tie for the Penguins.
In the 108
th minute, Concordia was called for a pass back to its keeper resulting in a free kick deep inside the 18-yard box. Arturo Carrillo took the first shot, but it bounced off the wall and Austen McGregor followed with another ball off the wall and the game ended in a tie.
This ends the Penguins 2017 season.
