Penguins fall to Otter in final non-conference game

Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican men's basketball fell 80-72 Sunday night in its final non-conference game against Cal State Monterey Bay at the Conlan Center.
 
Freshman Jordan Williams had his best game of his early career with 21 points and eight rebounds to lead the Penguins (1-6). Freshman Christian Futch added with a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds to go with three blocks, while Jeremiah Gray added 18 points and Cedric Thomas had 12. Koen Sapwell led the Otters (2-5) with a game-high 22 points.
 
Dominican shot 43.1 percent from the field and CSUMB was a nearly identical 43.3 percent, but the difference came from behind the arc as the Otters hit 14 3-pointers on 42.4 percent shooting. The Penguins doubled CSUMB in offensive rebounds with 16 in the game, but were unable to capitalize and finished with a small 9-7 advantage in second chance points.
 
Jonquis Bouyea led the Otters on an 11-2 run to start the game with five points in the first five minutes. Futch sparked a 7-point run for the Penguins with a fast-break layup followed by a block and they tied the game at 18 on a Gray 3-pointer.
 
After Gray hit another 3-pointer to tie the game, Dominican held on defense and Williams cut into the lane for a layup to give the Penguins their first lead at 23-21 with five minutes left in the half. The teams traded buckets the rest of the way and the game was tied 29-29 at the break.
 
The seesaw battled continued into the first five minutes of the second half with six lead changes and a tie. Sapwell hit a shot behind the arc for Cal State Monterey Bay to ignite an 8-2 run that gave them the 46-40 lead with 12:54 remaining, and the Otters would hold the lead the remainder of the game.
 
Williams cut the deficit to one at 48-47 with 11 minutes remaining with a personal 5-0 run, but CSUMB quickly built back a nine-point lead. Futch had an offensive rebound and a putback and followed with a block on the other end to again start a run for the Penguins. Williams hit a 3-pointer in transition and Thomas added two free throws to cut the Otter lead to 64-62 with 4:23 on the clock, but it was as close as Dominican would get for the rest of the game.
