Penguins fall to No. 16 Wildcats

Box Score CHICO, Calif. – Dominican men's basketball fell 92-53 Wednesday night to No. 16 Chico State at Acker Gymnasium.
 
Jeremiah Gray led three Penguin players with 15 points to go with five rebounds and four assists. Cedric Thomas added 15 points for Dominican (1-5), while Christopher Williams II chipped in 11. Corey Silverstorm led the Wildcats (3-1) with a game-high 25 points and seven assists.
 
The Penguins finished the game shooting 37.9 percent from the floor and 28.6 percent behind the arc, but were unable to hold back Chico State who finished shooting 59.3 percent from the field and 55.0 percent from behind the arc.
 
The teams traded points in the early part of the game and Chris Williams II knocked down a 3-pointer to give Dominican the slim 9-7 lead with 16:37 remaining. Chico battled back quickly with two shots behind the arc to retake the lead, but Jeremiah Gray hit his first 3-pointer of the game to cut it back to one with 14 minutes left in the half.
 
The Wildcats took control with a 10-3 run over the next four minutes to take a 23-15 lead at the halfway mark of the first half. After they increased the lead to 12, Gray collected an offensive rebound and putback followed by a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 32-25 with five minutes left in the half. The teams continued to trade points, but the Wildcats were able to take on four points to their lead for a 40-29 lead at the break.
 
After trading buckets to start of the second half, Marvin Timothy sparked a 9-2 run for Chico State with a dunk and a tip-in to push the lead to 21 with 8:46 remaining. The Wildcats continued to add to their lead to finish with the 92-53 victory.
 
Dominican will return home Sunday to face Cal State Monterey Bay at 6 p.m. PST at the Conlan Center. Live stats and video will be available online.
