Penguins come up short against Lancers

Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican men's soccer kept things close, but fell 1-0 Thursday to California Baptist at Kennelly Field.

The Lancers (15-0-2, 11-0-1 PacWest) held a 19-3 advantage in shots, but a smaller 8-3 margin in shots on frame due to strong defending by the Penguins (4-10-2, 1-9-2 PacWest) back line. Christian Lathrop provided strong play in the net collecting seven saves on the day for Dominican.

The Penguins made things difficult for the Lancers in the first half limiting them to three shots on goal. Austen McGregor had the first scoring opportunity for Dominican in the 15th minute on a counter, but Edgar Benitez made the save.

Cal Baptist then had two chances to take the lead in the 27th minute, but Sebastian Wiesboeck's shot hit the post and Aidan Apodaca's shot off the rebound hit the crossbar. In the 33rd minute, Cole Henderson was able to put a head on a ball in the middle of the box, but Benitez deflected the ball to himself to keep the game scoreless.

The Lancers' Aidan Apodaca scored the lone goal of the game in the 63rd minute after Joey Chica found him alone in the middle of the box with a cross. Bryan Juarez was sent off in the 74th minute on a red card for dissent, but the Penguins defense held strong down the wire and held the Lancers without another shot on goal.
