Penguins fall to Gators after slow start

Box Score SAN FRANCISCO — Dominican women's basketball fell 87-77 to San Francisco State at The Swamp on Sunday.

Junior Natalie Diaz and senior Sandra Ikeora led the Penguins (2-1) as they both notched double-doubles. Diaz poured in 25 points and collected 11 rebounds while Ikeora finished with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Junior Alanna Scott also finished in double-digits with 11 points, shooting 3-4 from three-point range. Courtenay Brown led the Gators (1-0) with 24 points in 25 minutes off the bench.

Dominican started slowly offensively as freshman Julia Razo got the Penguins on the board a few minutes into the first quarter with a three-pointer. San Francisco State took full advantage, jumping out to a 22-10 lead on a jumper by Imani Smith.

Dominican was able to chip away at the deficit in the second quarter as a free throw from Ikeora brought them to within 43-37. After the Gators later stretched the lead back out to 12 on a three from Brown, senior Alexis Price pulled the Penguins back within nine on a three of her own in the final minute before halftime.

After falling behind by as many as 14 in the third quarter, a pair of free throws from Diaz cut the deficit to five with under a minute left in the period.

Brown hit a three halfway through the fourth quarter to extend the lead back to double-digits, putting San Francisco State ahead 81-69 and the lead would not shrink much from there. Dominican got to within eight on a free throw from Ikeora with just under four minutes to play but that was as close as they would get.

The Penguins take the court again Wednesday as they travel to Cal-State Monterey Bay for a 3 p.m. tip. Live stats and video will be available online.
