Penguins win second straight to start season

Box Score ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Dominican women's basketball picked up their second straight win to start the season, defeating Sonoma State 94-79 at the Wolves' Den on Saturday night.

The Penguins (2-0) shot 38.5% from three, converting on 10 of 26 attempts, while holding the Seawolves (1-1) to a 42.5% field goal percentage. Junior Alanna Scott led the way for Dominican with 26 points on 9-13 shooting, including 5-8 on three-pointers. Sandy Ikeora picked up another double-double, finishing with 21 points and 15 rebounds. Sophomore Marisa Mondave came off the bench to add 19 points in just 17 minutes, knocking down three triples.

Scott got the Penguins off to a good start, burying a three to give Dominican an early 7-2 lead. Mondave added a pair of free throws later in the quarter to extend the Penguins lead to double-digits at 19-9. Ikeora found Scott for a layup early in the second quarter to put Dominican ahead 25-12. Ikeora later finished one in the paint herself to extend the advantage to 35-18.

The Penguins began to pull away as the second half began as Scott nailed a three on Dominican's first possession out of the break. Junior Angelica Collins pushed the lead to 19 on a layup and just a minute later junior Natalie Diaz finished one in the paint to make it 57-36. Scott closed out the quarter with a last-second three, putting the Penguins up 69-48.

Dominican's lead ballooned to 25, their largest of the night, as Scott drilled another three early in the fourth quarter. A jumper from Molly Donovan trimmed Sonoma State's deficit to 10 with just over five minutes to play but the Penguins used a 9-0 run, highlighted by a three from freshman Julia Razo, to move ahead 89-70 and seal the win.
