Cat Thomason led Dominican women's volleyball to a 3-0 sweep (25-19, 25-22, 25-18) Wednesday night over Notre Dame de Namur at the Conlan Center.
Thomason led the Penguins (4-9, 3-2 PacWest) with 12 kills, while adding three blocks. Senior
Aimee Steinwand finished with 10 kills and junior
Brittany Latigue recorded six blocks. Bianca Alvarez finished with a game-high 16 kills for the Argonauts (9-6, 4-3 PacWest).
Early in the first set freshman
Josie Walser sparked a 7-0 run with a kill, giving Dominican an 8-4 advantage. After NDNU tied the set at 12-12, the Penguins went on a 4-0 run to take back the lead, capped by a kill from Steinwand. A kill from Allison Anderson brought the Argonauts to within two at 20-18 but that was as close as they would get. Back-to-back kills by junior
Kate Even and Latigue pushed the Dominican lead to 24-19 and an attack error by Alvarez ended the set.
Chantal Zahrndt and Alvarez led NDNU to an early 11-4 lead in the second set with two kills and a block assist each to power a 7-0 run. The lead grew to as many as eight, but Dominican stuck around and began to chip away at the lead. Steinwand led a 4-0 charge with two aces from the service line to cut the Argonauts lead to one at 18-17. Thomason, Even and
Catherine Johnson then had back-to-back-to-back kills to give Dominican a 20-19 lead and force an NDNU timeout. Steinwand led a final 3-point burst with a kill and a block assist on set point for the Penguins.
The Penguins started slowly in the third set, falling behind 4-1 and again 7-4. A service ace from Even tied the set 9-9 and another from Walser gave Dominican a 13-11 lead. Cheyenne Te'o recorded a kill for NDNU to tie the set 14-14. Dominican fell behind once again at 15-14 before Walser started a 5-0 run with a kill, forcing the Argonauts to call timeout. After a service error from Alvarez made it 24-18, Johnson finished the set and match with a kill.
